The way it should have been: Intruder Forces Himself into Elementary School, Shot Dead by the Principal

Freedom carries risk and responsibility.  In American society, none of us can predict with certainty who among us, in the absence of clear evidence, will commit the most evil, heinous crime, and stop it before it happens.  In hindsight, we can kick through the ashes and say, “Somebody should have seen it coming and done something."  In some cases (Nidal Malik Hasson/Ft. Hood Shootings, Jared Loughner/Tucson Shootings, including U S House of Representatives Gabrielle Giffords), there was plenty of evidence about their violent intent.  In other cases, there is just an ominous sense of somebody who is not quite right in the head.

So, how can a free society protect itself against an evil sub-human like Adam Lanza?  Do we lock up everybody who is “odd,” “remote,” has “violent tendencies” or a history of emotional problems?  What about not allowing those who are "different" to buy guns?  In fact, Lanza tried to buy a rifle but wouldn’t complete the paperwork or submit to a background check or waiting period, so he was refused.  Connecticut has very strict gun laws.

Here are portions of Federal Law, found in Just Facts. A Resource for Independent Thinkers

• It is illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison for the following people to receive, possess, or transport any firearm or ammunition:

someone convicted of or under indictment for a felony punishable by more than one year in prison, someone convicted of a misdemeanor punishable by more than two years in prison, a fugitive from justice, an unlawful user of any controlled substance, someone who has been ruled as mentally defective or has been committed to any mental institution, an illegal alien, someone dishonorably discharged from the military, someone who has renounced his or her U.S. citizenship, someone subject to certain restraining orders, or someone convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor.[57] [58] [59] [60]

• It is illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison to sell or transfer any firearm or ammunition to someone while "knowing" or having "reasonable cause to believe" this person falls into any of the prohibited categories listed above.[61] [62]

• It is illegal for any federally licensed firearms business to sell or transfer any firearm without first conducting a background check to see if the buyer/recipient falls into any of the prohibited categories listed above.[66] [67]

Adam Lanza "worked around the problem" of bothering with purchasing his own guns.  He stole his mother’s guns, killed her, and used her legally purchased and registered handguns for his killing spree.

In hindsight, we can assert that Adam Lanza should never have had access to his mother’s weapons. Maybe she should never have had them in the first place, because her son was "different" and had been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.  Does every person suffering from a personality disorder murder people?  Whose responsibility was it to make that judgment call?  Hers?  His mental health professional?  The state?  How would you enforce it?

Obama has stated,  “We have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this. Regardless of the politics.”

Will that "meaningful action" be based on accurate facts and statistics, or will it be driven by hysteria, propaganda, and distortions?  If facts and statistics aren’t brought into the discussion, parents will have no reason to feel secure about the safety of their children.

Should the federal government take guns away from millions of law abiding citizens, in order to stop potential killers from getting their hands on them?  Would it stop criminals from getting their hands on them?

Senator Dick Durbin, from Illinois, seems to think so.  Durbin, the Senate Majority Whip, said he will hold a hearing in the next few weeks on the issue.  “We need to sit down and have a quiet and calm conversation on the Second Amendment,” he told Fox News Sunday.

Why would anybody want to take advice from this man who cannot control gun violence in Democratically-controlled Illinois?   Illinois is the only state in the USA that forbids concealed carry permits.

He ignores the evidence from his own city of Chicago which has proven time and again that more gun control results in more gun violence.   See Chicago Shootings Spike 49% in November Despite Strict Gun Laws

This man is going to tell the country how to eliminate gun violence?

And what about this?

* In 1982, the city of Chicago instituted a ban on handguns. This ban barred civilians from possessing handguns except for those registered with the city government prior to enactment of the law. The law also specified that such handguns had to be re-registered every two years or owners would forfeit their right to possess them. In 1994, the law was amended to require annual re-registration.[43] [44] [45]

The result was this:

Since the outset of the Chicago handgun ban, the percentage of Chicago murders committed with handguns has averaged about 40% higher than it was before the law took effect.[55]

* In 2005, 96% of the firearm murder victims in Chicago were killed with handguns.[56]  Just

The same thing happened in Washington, DC.

* During the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower.[37]

And in Britain:

* Not counting the above-listed anomalies, the homicide rate in England and Wales has averaged 52% higher since the outset of the 1968 gun control law and 15% higher since the outset of the 1997 handgun ban.[42]

So, where are you safer?

In right-to-carry states, the violent crime rate is 24% lower than the rest of the U.S., the murder rate is 28% lower, and the robbery rate is 50% lower.

"No Firearms Zones" are Invitations to Slaughter

Taking guns away from innocent, law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop criminals from unlawfully obtaining guns.

"The recent slaughter at the grade school in Connecticut is an unimaginable tragedy that could never have been predicted.  What can be predicted with pinpoint accuracy will be the national call to disarm honest, law-abiding citizens as a strategy to somehow prevent this from happening again. The hue and cry to collect and ban defensive weapons will propel politicians and those who worship the flawless power of government to trot out all the discounted myths of gun control that always miss the target.

"What most opponents of the right to bear arms won’t tell you is that the very likelihood of guns being present deters a vast majority crimes; ne’er a shot has to be fired. That’s because cowards who open fire on innocent six-year olds are encouraged by knowing that there is nothing on campus to stop them. Signs posted on the perimeter announcing "No Firearms Zone" virtually guarantee an unrestricted free-for-all to anyone evil enough to engage. But denying all citizens the right to protect themselves will in no way hinder the criminal-minded from carrying out their nefarious designs.

"The greatest testament to the safety of a heavily-armed environment is the fact that no one has ever tried to storm a gun show, if they did they know they would look like Swiss cheese in a nanosecond."  P J O’Malley.

PJ O’Malley has it right.

Adam Lanza might have been a lot of things–different, remote, quiet, emotionally unstable. But he wasn’t stupid. He reasoned well enough to know that the safest place for him, and the most dangerous place for his defenseless victims, was in a “gun free zone.”  He knew there would be no adult on the premises capable of protecting those children from the massacre he planned for them.  The Century Movie Theater in Aurora, Colorado, where 12 people were killed, 59 injured was a “gun free zone.”  The only people unarmed in these hazardous centers are law-abiding citizens.

Murderers, even the so-called "crazy" ones, have the mental capacity to judge "the right place to murder versus the wrong place."  Crazy?  No.  Evil.  Evil is a word that is not found in the Liberal Dictionary.

Law-Abiding Citizens Use Guns to Avert Crime Everyday.

So, what might have stopped Adam Lanza?  The title of this article offers a clue.

Now and then, a criminal who forces his way into the home or business of a well-armed, law-abiding citizen runs into resistance he hadn’t expected.  Those perpetrators are either stopped dead, or they run away like the cowards they truly are.

You probably don’t hear much about these stories from the liberal mainstream media.  They are an "inconvenient truth" they don’t want you or anyone else to see.  Here’s a website that reports these life-and-property-saving events:  Guns Save Lives.

A few of these true stories follow this article.  Without the Second Amendment, these law-abiding citizens might have died horrible, excrutiating deaths at the hands of these criminals.  Some of these innocents who are alive today are children and teens.
