Dr. Everett Piper, President of Wesleyan University Speaking on Common Core

"I believe ‘common core’ is a bad idea that will have bad consequences. The goal of good education should be the pursuit of what is true and just and right and real… not the protection or propagation of what is ‘common.’ The best education has never been about dumbing down the academy to a group of ideas that are agreed upon by the powerful or the popular.  To the contrary, the educated person enters into the debate with an open mind, challenging the consensus rather than accepting a set of closed constructs of ‘commonality.’

.

"Classical education – Liberal education if you will – is not about average ideas. It’s not about what everyone else thinks… Good education pursues whatever is true and whatever is noble, whatever is right and whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and whatever is admirable."  Common Core Forum Speech by Dr. Everett Piper, June 18, 2013
