Gilbert to Honor Army Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg – May 22 at 6:00 p.m.

GILBERT, AZ – The Town of Gilbert will gather in a display of appreciation and gratitude for a returning Army veteran of ten deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan during the next Operation Welcome Home ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22nd.

The event will honor Sergeant First Class (SFC) Cory Remsburg and his family.  The program Operation Welcome Home honors our returning veterans and their families with a community ceremony expressing Gilbert’s support, pride, and patriotism. It is one of the most well-attended and celebrated community events series in Gilbert’s history. 

Cory was severely injured on October 1, 2009, while serving his 10th combat rotation in Afghanistan deployed with the US Special Operations Command, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Cory has spent the past 3 ½ years at numerous hospitals receiving lifesaving surgeries and countless hours of medical care, rehabilitation treatments, and therapy programs.

SFC Cory Remsburg joined the army in 2001.  He completed his basic training and advanced training at Ft. Benning, Georgia.  Cory’s overseas deployments include six combat tours in Iraq and four tours in Afghanistan with a total 39 months of combat service.

Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg has received numerous medals and awards including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal with 2 devices, Army Achievement Medal with 2 devices, Army good Conduct Medal with 3 devices, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with 5 Combat Stars, and Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon with 2 devices, among others.

The family will be available following the event.

Operation Welcome Home begins at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 50 E. Civic Center Drive, Gilbert, Arizona. It is televised on local Cox Channel 11 and streamed online at Gilbert Live on www.gilbertaz.gov.

About Operation Welcome Home:  Operation Welcome Home events allow the Town of Gilbert to demonstrate a true appreciation and provide a hero’s welcome to our veterans and their families.  The Town invites residents to join us in recognizing the valuable service and dedication our military men and women provide our country.  Under the program, the Council honors the individuals at a formal council meeting with a Town of Gilbert Proclamation in appreciation of their commitment to our nation. The celebration for each returning serviceperson is a grand event. With the support of veterans’ organizations, service groups, business leaders, employers, community leaders and mentors, the young men and women are reintroduced to our community and are thanked for their effort and sacrifice.
