The War on Coal: Take Action!

by Patrick O’Malley
Precinct Committeeman LD12

On October 21 we talked about the EPA’s War on Coal and the power plants they are targeting in Arizona. The Sierra Club is bragging that they’ve closed down 150 coal power plants since 2010, and they want to make the Navajo Generating Station (NGS) in Page, AZ number 151. That’s the plant that supplies 90% of the electricity used to operate the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal.

Those of us outside of the Page area won’t be part of the economic disaster that will take place in the Navajo Nation if NGS is shut down. They are the ones who will lose good paying jobs at the power plant and the coal mine. But everyone in Arizona will be affected, because, long term, somebody will have to pay to replace a perfectly good power plant with decades of life left in it. And that will be all of us paying more for electricity and water.

There are two EPA issues coming up right away that affect coal fired power plants in Arizona. The first is carbon capture with a deadline for the public to comment by November 8.  You can comment by email.

EPA’s Secret Deals with Environmentalists: Sue and Settle

The EPA is under investigation for a practice called Sue and Settle. Environmentalists in government and private organizations have found ways to create new regulations by fashioning lawsuits tailored to have courts institute policy changes. Both parties involved in the lawsuits secretly decide in advance what the outcome will be and how much taxpayer money will be transferred to the environmental group in the settlement. In other words, they are exploiting the courts to change laws, and in the process, helping to fund radical environmental groups without legislative or taxpayer consent. Millions of taxpayer dollars have been given to these groups.

The Impact of Coal Restrictions on the Navajo Nation: Sen. Carlyle Begay

In announcing his recent decision to change from the Democrat to the Republican Party, Arizona Senator Carlyle Begay spoke of unemployment rates as high as 80% in his district.   He also stated that future progress in Arizona has to include partnerships with rural and tribal communities.  It is the Republican party that has embraced these crucial partnerships, which are the cornerstone of the future of our state.

As a rural Arizonan living in Gila County, I understand some of the concerns that we share.  Rural and tribal Arizonans live in and of the land.  We are sustained by it.  We respect and love it.  Rural Arizona offers rich natural resources that have fed, clothed, sheltered, and provided energy and water to millions of people.

The Democrat Party has waged war on our livestock, timber, and coal industries, the very industries that sustain Arizona’s rural and tribal communities.

Back in July 2015, then Democrat Senator Carlyle Begay spoke at the Heartland Institute’s International Conferences on Climate Change.

Please see a summary of Senator Begay’s speech following the video.

Why does no one seem to care?

(The following article was sent to me anonymously.  It’s a timely, accurate, and thoughtful essay that needs to be read by every American.)

Are you aware that we the people are under assault in this country?  Maybe not you personally, yet, but when one group of patriots in America is deprived of their freedoms guaranteed to them by the Constitution, it’s a hostile invasion of all who stand for liberty.  And that is what happened to the ranchers in Harney County, Oregon, in the past weeks, and in Nevada before that.  There is a systematic taking of our precious liberties.

Why does no one seem to care?

Where is the media on this?  Where are the folks who are focused on restoring our trust lands across the western United States?  Are we to sit and watch those among us get incarcerated for ranching?  For peacefully protesting the egregious treatment they have received from their own government, for years?

We know that these lands do not belong to the federal government.  The federal government manages those lands for we the people under contracts that were supposed to be assigned back to the states years ago.  The federal government contracts grazing leases to local ranchers. These grazing leases abut the ranches owned by private citizens of the United States.  These ranchers, by and large, are good stewards of the lands they lease to use for grazing.  But they are methodically being deprived of the use of the lands owned by we the people, even with legal leases to do so. In Oregon, the Burea of Land Management (BLM) is burning grazing land that is under lease to ranchers for grazing their cattle, and the BLM is burning the cattle, homes, and corrals in the process.

BLM Agents in Oregon Burned up Cattle, Homes, Buildings, Fences, Grassland

If you haven’t been following the Hammond case in Harney County, Oregon, click HERE for the timeline, dating back to the 1970’s, of the cruel and corrupt methods used by both the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM), to drive this family, and many other ranchers, off their land. Click HERE for a Simple Action You Can Take to Help the Hammond Family.

Ask yourself:  Why are we hearing about so many more catastrophic fires ever since–thanks to the environmentalists and federal agencies–private cattle ranchers and lumber operations have been driven off the land?  Add to this that the federal government controls 3 out of every 10 acres of land in America and is power hungry for more.  Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said the government’s “massive” control over land has preserved less than 1 percent of endangered species and instead harmed individuals whose livelihoods depend on land ownership.

Oregon ranchers Steven Hammond and his father Dwight were sentenced in June 2012 as “Arsenal Terrorists.” The maximum punishment for this federal crime is death.  So, what did these ranchers do to warrant their time in prison, and the likelihood that they will be imprisoned again?

Please STOP the EPA’s War on Coal in Northern Arizona: Sen. Sylvia Allen

Please submit your comments to the EPA expressing your opposition to the jobs-killing "Clean Power Plan."   The environmentalist groups–who don’t live anywhere near Northern Arizona–are writing in favor of the plan four to one.  We need your comments!  The letter Arizona Senator Sylvia Allen used to submit a comment is below.  You are welcome to use all or part of it, but please write how this plan will affect you and your family.

Cliven Bundy Calls on Sheriff to Start Arresting BLM Feds

In the ongoing crisis in Clark County leadership, Clive Bundy demanded that Sheriff Doug Gillespie do what he is paid to do.  Clive Bundy stood before Moapa Valley Town Hall the evening of April 9 and stated:

“He is the man that has constitutional jurisdiction and authority, he has policing power here in Clark County Nevada, and he has arresting power, so we elected him and we pay him, what do we pay him to do?” asked Bundy, adding, “Don’t we pay him to protect our life, liberty and property?”

“I love you people, and I love this land, and I love freedom and liberty, and I love the sovereign state of Nevada and nobody can tell me the United States owns this land,” said Bundy, adding that he would pay any grazing fees to Clark County and not the federal government.

Asserting that the land under dispute was owned by the people of Clark County, Bundy asked, “Is the United States government trespassing on your land?” to which the crowd reacted with an emphatic “yes!”

During the town hall meeting, Bundy’s sister, Margaret Houston also spoke about how she was assaulted by BML agents earlier in the day, remarking, “It felt like a war zone and I felt like I was not in the United States….they have snipers, they have helicopters, they’re carrying machine guns, it’s not pretty, it’s like a foreign country.”
