Phoenix Chorale sings “Ubi Caritas” by Ola Gjeilo

The Phoenix Chorale with Charles Bruffy, Artistic Director performing "Ubi Caritas" by Ola Gjeilo. Filmed on February 13, 2011 at Christ Church of the Ascension in Paradise Valley.

Ken Ryan, Co-Director of the East Valley Academy, wrote:

Ubi caritas is an antiphon dating from sometime between A.D. 300 and 900.  This style of singing (responsive) was introduced into the Christian church by Ignatius of Antioch, who met his end by getting fed to the wild beasts in the Colosseum (circa A.D. 107)

This version is arranged by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and is of sublime beauty. (Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est: “Where true charity is, God is there,” or Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est: “Where charity and love are, . . .”) This is not the complete version, but from this, you can definitely see the beauty of ancient music sung in Latin.  Enjoy!"

The Phoenix Chorale will be performing beginning December 18, through 22 at several Phoenix locations.  Click HERE for information.
