It was the first time in his 30-year career that Kevin Vickers ever had to use his weapon. He shot and killed Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Muslim convert. Zehaf-Bibeau was the son of a leading Canadian immigration official. Before Vickers stopped him, the gunman managed to shoot and kill Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a 24-year-old father standing guard at Ottawa’s War Memorial. He also injured another officer.
A tourist captured the last photo ever taken of Corporal Nathan Cirillo alive, pictured below on the left. After he was shot by Zehaf-Bibeau, bystanders tried desperately to save him by performing CPR.
