Fear and Trembling in Phoenix: A Common Core Cautionary Tale, Part I

Arizona is widely hailed as the national leader in school choice. It is also one of a growing number of states turning against Common Core. But you wouldn’t know it from what’s going on inside the Capitol these days.

Proposed legislation affirming parents’ basic rights over their children’s education is being held or amended within an inch of its life in the House and Senate Education Committees—all in spite of an explicit statutory Parents’ Bill of Rights affirming their inalienable liberty over their children’s education and upbringing (see here and here).

As more states fight back against federal contamination of classrooms, Arizona offers an important lesson about extinguishing Common Core for good—so it doesn’t keep rising from the dead in one infectious form or another.

About a year ago Arizona Governor Doug Ducey urged a “review and revise”  placebo instead of a “repeal and replace” antidote for Common Core. Last fall at the urging of the state’s elected pro-parental choice/anti-Common Core Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas, a majority of the State Board of Education voted to sever ties with it—but the board left the Common Core -influenced standards and the reviled AzMERIT state assessment.

The Magnificent Arizona Republicans

On these two days, June 12 and 13, 2013, in a 12.5 hour legislative session, the Arizona Republican Representatives you will see in this video distinguished themselves forever in Arizona history by doing something remarkable.  They stood up for Republican Principles.   These are the same principles that are embraced by people who are called, sometimes with contempt, "TEA Party."   These are not "Far Right Wing" or even "Conservative" tenets.   They are Republican principles and the Republican platform.   It is too bad that there are individuals in the Arizona Legislature with an "R" next to their names who do not stand up for these principles.  Because there are so many who have cowardly abandoned their own Party, we sometimes call ourselves "Conservative."  But the fact is, a conservative is simply someone who stands firmly rooted in Republican principles.

Please view this outstanding video produced by Arizona Commitment.  The title of the video is Arizona Commitment Thanks Arizona’s True Conservatives.

Gilbert Watch has provided the names of every person you see, in order of appearance, below the video.   Following their names are the names of Republican Representatives who do not appear in the video, but who have also stood up on behalf of Republican principles, even in the face of contempt and criticism by the Leftist media.

Payson, Arizona  85547

A RESOLUTION OF THE
GILA COUNTY REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE (GCRC)
GILA COUNTY, STATE OF ARIZONA

TO CENSURE
ARIZONA GOVERNOR JAN BREWER AND 14 STATE LEGISLATORS

WHEREAS, Governor Jan Brewer conspired with 14 liberal Republican state legislators to form an alliance with the Democrat minorities in the Senate and House for the express purpose of thwarting the will of the .Republican majorities and violating the Arizona Constitution, the Republican Party Principles and the Republican Party Platform, including but not limited to the following:

•    They implemented the passage of Medicaid expansion – a key part of the disastrous healthcare plan known as ObamaCare.

•    They implemented government mandated national healthcare.

•    They approved taxpayer funding for abortions and increased funding for abortion services.

•    They expanded eligibility for welfare benefits, and invited 300,000+ new people into the welfare system.

•    They raised taxes.

•    They voted against tax relief and kept Arizona as the state with the second highest tax rate in the nation.

•    They voted against auditing the Arizona hospital bed tax.

•    They increased property taxes.

•    The only tax relief they offered was for special-interest industries who could afford to hire lobbyists.

•    They rejected a balanced budget and voted for one with a structural debt of $400 million.

•    They removed government oversight for special interests.

•    They voted against verifying citizenship as a requirement for Medicaid benefits.

•    They removed funding for English immersion for non-English-speaking students, thus ensuring the continuation of the failed, Democrat supported bilingual programs.

Gila County GOP Headquarters: Grand Opening & Tom Morrissey Fundraiser – July 19

The Gila County Republican Committee announces its Grand Opening at the Payson Republican Headquarters this Saturday, July 19, starting at 10:30 am.  Sheriff Joe Arpaio will cut the ribbon at 12 Noon.

Other special guests include candidate for Arizona Senate Tom Morrissey (LD18) and former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce.  Senator Pearce was the primary author of SB1070.  That was the law that allowed a local law enforcement officer to detain and arrest an individual when they have probable cause to believe that person is an illegal alien violating our country’s immigration laws.

Tom Morrissey Fundraiser

Following the Grand Opening, there will be a fundraiser on behalf of Tom Morrissey, starting at 1:00 pm, to be held at  Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 601 E. Highway 260, Payson.  Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be the Guest Speaker.  He will be joined by special guest former Arizona Senator Russell Pearce.

It is critical that Tom Morrissey win the Arizona Senate race against Jeff Dial in Legislative District 18.  Jeff Dial is one of 14 legislators that the Gila County Republican Committee voted to censure, along with Gov. Brewer, for their role in passing Medicaid Expansion.  See GCRC Resolution to Censure Gov. Brewer and 14 State Legislators.   In contrast, most Republicans stood firmly opposed to this damaging vote.  See Arizona State Legislator Heroes.

Tom Morrissey was the Chairman of the Arizona GOP from 2011-2013.  He was also the Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal for the Federal District of Arizona (Retired).  Seating is limited.  Tickets are $30 each, or 2 for $50.

Bruce Barton Passes, Husband of Rep. Brenda Barton

LD6 Representative Brenda Barton  lost her husband, Bruce, suddenly, following a brief hospitalization.  Bruce was Rep. Barton’s right arm.  Like Brenda, Bruce was a passionate patriot, a defender and fighter for individual liberty, at a time when too many people look to government to solve their problems. He was completely devoted to Brenda. He will be painfully missed. May Brenda feel God’s comfort and Light as she carries on.  Please pray for Brenda and her family during this very difficult time.

"Censure Arizona Representatives Frank Pratt (LD8), T J Shope (LD8), and Douglas Coleman (LD16) for voting for the Medicaid expansion against the expressed position of this body and the Republican Party platform, aligning with the democrats and helping welfare expansion and Obamacare in Arizona. Remember when Scott Smith Endorsed Bob Worsley for AZ Senate?

Scott Smith, after knowing Bob Worsley for 30 years, called Worsley a "conservative."

Bob Worsley won that race for Arizona Senate in 2012, against Russell Pearce.  So, how did Bob Worsley, the "conservative," perform during his tenure?  Not only did he vote for expanding Medicaid in Arizona, but he also voted with the Democrats more than the Democrat Minority Leader Chad Campbell.  According to Americans For Prosperity, Sen. Worsley earned himself a Hero of Big Government rating.

Ralph Heap Exceeds Maximum Number of Signatures for AZ Senate LD25!

When you let the people know the facts, they support the right candidates.  So it is with Dr. Ralph Heap, candidate for Arizona Senate in Legislative District 25.  He and his supporters got the truth out to voters about the incumbent’s voting record, and they are NOT happy.  (See Bob Worsley’s Big Government rating from Americans for Prosperity HERE.)

Dr. Heap thanks all the many Precinct Committeemen and other volunteers who gathered petition signatures.  According to Dr. Heap, "The minimum signatures needed to get on the ballot was 568 and the elections department stopped counting after the maximum requirement of 1702…. and we even exceeded that! I am humbled by the overwhelming show of support for my campaign."
