Many Gilbert residents don’t want their tax dollars awarded to non-profits. We as citizens want to determine who we want to assist, and we want to do it voluntarily. It isn’t charity if the government confiscates our money and gives it to others.
As Americans, we believe it is our duty to help those who need help. But, over time, we have allowed the government to take over our duty.
That’s what Tempe pastor Jon McHatten, the founder of For Our City, wants to change. Mayor John Lewis and Vice Mayor Jenn Daniels made the initial discovery of For Our City some time ago, and Council Member Victor Petersen has picked up the ball and run with it.
For Our City Gilbert is comprised of ordinary citizens from different organizations who have banned together to help their community.
After an initial brainstorming meeting held on March 27, they have decided to hold quarterly project events called “Live Love Gilbert Days,” and the first one will be April 21.
Here is your chance to be a part of a new movement, Gilbert residents helping Gilbert residents!
Find a project that suits your talents. Projects for Live Love Gilbert Day April 21 include:
- Painting the exterior walls of the Oak Tree Elementary School.
- Pulling weeds and trimming trees at the Riparian Preserve.
- Helping to set up and take down tables, booths and other items for Gilbert Global Village Festival.
- A tangible project to touch the life of a hospice patient. Holding Hope Project, Sun Valley Community Church.
- Helping provide Lunch for Gilbert Fire and Police Departments.
- Pulling weeds at neglected and abandoned homes. Locations to be released.
- Providing light landscaping, minor home repairs and other chores for frail, elderly and disabled residents.
