WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States of America was signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution provides safeguards for our liberties including such fundamental rights as free speech, religious liberty, and the equal protection of the laws; and
WHEREAS, all citizens share in the responsibility of protecting and defending the Constitution and preserving it for posterity; and
WHEREAS, society benefits from a greater understanding that the Constitution is part of our great national heritage and the foundation of our government; and
WHEREAS, study of the historical events that took place in Philadelphia leading up to and including the week of September 17, 1787, enhances the understanding of the Constitution.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W Lewis, Mayor of the Town of Gilbert, Arizona, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 through September 23, 2010 as:
“CONSTITUTION WEEK”
in Gilbert, and I urge all of my fellow citizens to participate in the observance of Constitution Week by reading the Constitution and discovering for themselves its norms and values.
